Beyoncé Skips Met Gala, Much to Chagrin of Twitterverse

Awards season may be over, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of opportunities for Hollywood’s best and brightest to shine. The Met Gala, the annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, has historically been one of the more adventurous and exciting events for famous fashion players. Since the 1970s, this themed soiree has served as a veritable who’s who of celebrity clotheshorses.

These stars are expected to go all-out, too. At the Met Gala, the most outrageous outfits are typically applauded, rather than panned. And of course, celebs are expected to spend hours getting extravagant ‘dos and stunning makeup looks. Some don wigs, while others dye their hair specifically for the occasion. Whether temporary or permanent — which would require recoloring every four to six weeks, were they to keep those styles for future use — the aim is to dazzle.

But one stunning star who was noticeably absent from this year’s red carpet — much to the dismay of those watching the events from their couches — was none other than Queen Bey.

Although she’s attended the event every year since 2011, Beyoncé and her husband, Jay-Z, were nowhere to be seen that night. The Twitterverse exploded as fans expressed their disappointment. Since Beyoncé’s looks over the years have been nothing short of revolutionary for fashion devotees, it’s no surprise that everyone took note of her absence.

But others argued that no one should have been shocked by her no-show. By now (and thanks to her viral pregnancy photos), everyone knows she and Jay-Z will soon be welcoming twins. In mid-April, the singer canceled her Coachella appearance because of her pregnancy. According to a statement obtained by Billboard, she backed out because she was “following the advice of her doctors to keep a less-rigorous schedule in the coming months.” She’s been reportedly relaxing as much as possible until she gives birth, which should allegedly be soon; Refinery29 has speculated that Bey could be in her third trimester.

Still, you can’t blame loyal fans for hoping the Queen would show up and grace everyone with her presence (and undoubtedly killer ensemble). But it looks as if she may be laying low for now. And regardless of her reasons, she’ll surely be back in action — and looking flawless — before you know it.
